About

Karshaka Vidyapeedam

Karshaka Vidyapeedam, popularly known as Kerala Farmers’ University, is headquartered at Padannakkad in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. It is a university of the farmers, by the farmers, and for the farmers, established in 2020 under the chairmanship of Prof. K. Abdul Kareem, a renowned extension professional. Karshaka Vidyapeetam is the brainchild of Dr. Kareem.

The vision of the Farmers’ University is to nurture a new generation of farmers equipped with both time-tested farming wisdom and modern, science-based knowledge. Its mission includes farmers’ education, farmers’ experimentation and research, farmer-to-farmer extension, and initiatives in processing, value addition, and marketing.

In Kerala, the dependence of people on agriculture is steadily declining. The children of farmers are not choosing farming as a profession, and the generation traditionally known as farmers is slowly disappearing. Hence, it has become essential to preserve the existing farming community and to pass on their knowledge, legacy, and culture to a receptive and willing segment of the younger generation.
It is in this context that the Kerala Farmers’ University was conceived and began its work.
