Vegan Leather from Arecanut Sheaths

Purna Creations, based in Shivamogga, Karnataka, is producing vegan leather using arecanut sheaths. In addition to arecanut sheaths, they also make vegan leather from banana fibres and pineapple leaves. Along with manufacturing vegan-leather sheets, Purna Creations markets a wide range of products made from it. Bags, casual shoes, slippers, upholstery, cushions, wall panels, and seat covers are all crafted from arecanut sheaths.

In today’s world, vegan leather is gaining greater prestige than conventional leather, and its market is expanding rapidly.

According to Suresh, the owner of Purna Creations, the technology for manufacturing this vegan leather was obtained from the National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology (NINFET) in Kolkata.

Purna Creations sources arecanut sheaths through four women’s self-help groups operating in arecanut-growing regions of Karnataka. These women have been trained to extract fibres from the sheaths. Each sheath fetches them ₹6–8. Depending on size, about 20–25 sheaths are required to produce one square metre of vegan leather.

The enterprise, which began operations in December last year, currently has a monthly production capacity of 500 square metres of vegan leather. This will soon be scaled up to 2,000 square metres, Suresh added.

Shivamogga district alone has over 1,28,000 hectares of arecanut plantations. Being environmentally friendly, the initiative not only ensures sustainable utilisation of agricultural by-products but also provides additional income to rural households and contributes significantly to women’s empowerment.

കൊൽക്കത്തയിലെ നാഷനൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് നാച്ചുറൽ ഫൈ ബർ എൻജിനീയറിങ് ആൻഡ് ടെക്നോളജിയിൽനിന്നാണ് ഇതിനുള്ള സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ സ്വന്തമാക്കിയതെന്ന് പർണ്ണ ക്രീയേഷൻസ് ഉടമ സുരേഷ് പറഞ്ഞു. കർണാടകത്തിലെ കമുകുകൃഷി മേഖലകളിലുള്ള 4 വനിതാ സ്വാശ്രയസംഘങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് പർണ സംസ്ക രണത്തിനാവശ്യമായ കമുകിൻപാള കണ്ടെത്തുന്നത്. ഇവർക്ക് പാളയിൽനിന്നു നാര് വേർതിരിക്കാൻ പരിശീലനം നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒരു പാളയ്ക്ക് 6-8 രൂപയാണ് വില നൽകുക.

ഒരു ചതുരശ്ര മീറ്റർ വീഗൻ ലെതർ ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ വലുപ്പമനുസരിച്ച് 20-25 പാള വേണ്ടിവരും. കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം ഡിസംബറിൽ പ്രവർത്തനമാരംഭിച്ച ഈ സംരംഭത്തിനു പ്രതിമാസം 500 ചതുരശ്ര മീറ്റർ വീഗൻ ലെതർ ആണ് ഉൽപാദനശേഷി. വൈകാതെ ഇത് 2000 ചതുരശ്ര മീറ്ററാക്കുമെ ന്ന് സുരേഷ് പറഞ്ഞു. ഷിമോഗാ ജില്ലയിൽ മാത്രം 1,28,000ഹെക്‌ടറിലേറെ കമുകിൻ തോട്ടങ്ങളുണ്ടത്രെ. പരിസ്‌ഥിതി സൗഹൃദ മാവുന്നതിനൊപ്പം ഗ്രാമീണഭവനങ്ങളിൽ വരുമാനമെത്തിക്കാനും സ്ത്രീശാക്തീകരണ ത്തിനും ഈ സംരംഭത്തിനു സാധിക്കുന്നു.
